Charles Grau, the son of Sebastian and Louisa (Lutz/Light) Grau, was born in Lancaster County 19 March 1841. In 1864 he married Margaret Cecelia Smith. They had eight children who lived to adulthood: Samuel Sebastian, Amanda, William S., Louisa Maud, Lillian Carrie, Charles Parker, Harry Smith and Abraham Daniel Grau. Four other children died as infants -- Charles Jr. (Amanda's twin brother) and Lovina M. born on 30 January 1873. The names of two other infants are unknow,
He is listed in the 1860 Census living with his parents in Windsor Township, Berks County, PA. He enlisted in Lancaster, PA on 4 October 1861 and mustered in on 19 October 1861. Charles was a Private with Company F, 9th PA Calvary (92nd Pennsylvania). He reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on the 1st of January 1864 in Cleveland, TN, and was honorably discharged on 18 July 1865.
