Charles Grau, the son of Sebastian and Louisa (Lutz/Light) Grau, was born in Lancaster County 19 March 1841. In 1864 he married Margaret Cecelia Smith. They had eight children who lived to adulthood: Samuel Sebastian, Amanda, William S., Louisa Maud, Lillian Carrie, Charles Parker, Harry Smith and Abraham Daniel Grau. Four other children died as infants -- Charles Jr. (Amanda's twin brother) and Lovina M. born on 30 January 1873. The names of two other infants are unknow,

Charles was a Private with Company F, 9th PA Calvary (92nd Pennsylvania). He reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on the 1st of January 1864 in Cleveland, TN, and was honorably discharged on 18 July 1865.
