Lewis Wetzel Pierce and Pearl Grace Riley were united in marriage on July 22, 1908 in Sullivan County, Tennessee

Alumnus of Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia

He had held pastorates in West Virginia, southwestern Virginia, and northeastern Tennessee

He served on the Board of Trustees at Emory & Henry for many years, and had been Superintendent of the Tazewell District of the Holston Conference

He was the first recipient of the DeFriece Award

The award was established in 1951 by Frank W. DeFriece Sr. in honor of his parents William R. and Martha Clark DeFriece; the trustees make the award to an alumnus or faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to humanity

After his retirement from the ministry, he served as the first President of the Crippled Childrens' Society of Virginia

He passed away at his home on Pennsylvania Avenue in Bristol, Tennessee
