Albert (Albrecht or Wojciech) Samp was born in Czenstkau, West Prussia (now Częstkowo) and was baptized at Lusin (Luzino) Catholic parish. He was the son of Albrecht Samp and Anna Driwa.

Albert married Caroline Kreft in 1851 at Lusin parish. They had at least eight children: August, Franz, twins John and Joseph, Emilia, Marie, Rose, and Pauline. Albert and Caroline came to Chicago in 1881 with most of their children.
