Confederate staff officer and author of an important and popular book on General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. Born in Louisa County, Virginia. Attended Hampton-Sidney College and the University of Virgina. Schoolteacher, pastor, and college professor. Entered Confederate service as a chaplain, 18th Virginia. Served as a major on Jackson's staff for several months; resigned due to fever. Post-War professor at University of Texas. Died in Victoria, Texas.
