LONG AND USEFUL LIFE IS ENDED -

MRS. EMILY C. GARRETSON PASSES AWAY AT AN ADVANCED AGE.
In spite of Weight of Eighty-Seven Years She Remained Mentally and Physically Active Until Almost the End - Leaves four Children in this City.

After a long, quiet walk through the latter end of life, the venerable Mrs. Emily C. Garretson, widow of Hon. William Garrison, passed away Eastern morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert H. Sherman, No. 1219 Division Avenue. death occurred at the age of 87 years, yet in spite of her advanced years Mrs. Garretson had been remarkably vigorous, both in body and mind until within the last few weeks, when her health began to fail gradually. Something more than a week ago she was obliged to take to her bed from the feebleness which she recognized as the approach of the end. Hers had been a Christian life, and with a Christian's resignation she calmly awaited the last hour, passing away in peaceful sleep, surrounded by her children and her children's children.

The deceased was born December 19, 1815, at Tioga Boro, Tioga county, Pa., the daughter of Allen D. and Mary Ann Caulkings. Most of her life was spent in the town of her birth, where her marriage to William Garretson, a prominent member of the bar, was also celebrated. Later she lived seeral years in Washington, D.C., where her husband held a responsible office in the government legal department.

Sixteen years ago she removed to Tacoma to join the other members of her family who had come to this city several years before. She was followed a few years later by her son, William C. Garretson. Judge H. F. Garretson and Mrs. Stella B. Atkinson are the other members of her family residing in this city. A daughter, Mrs. Emily Ramsdell, former of Tacoma, also survives, now living in Washington, D.C.

The late Mrs. Henrietta B. Wells, the wife of Bishop Wells, of Spokane, whose death occurred in Washington, D.C., last month, and whose remains were given interment in this city, was the sixth member of the family.

The deceased was a woman of many kindly qualities as well as possessed of rare attainments of culture and education, and her long residence in Tacoma won her a wide circle of friends in that city. She remained in full possession of her mental faculties to the last and at a considerable degree of strength and activity, and and among other light employments of her time, maintained an intimate correspondence with friends in the East, being an accomplished letter writer. She was a firm and consistent member of the Episcopal Church of this city. Her life was one of constant devotion to her family and helpfulness to her friends. Her long energetic years were partially due, no doubt, to heredity as her mother died at the age of 84 years, while her grandmother passed away at the remarkable age of 94 years.

The funeral wil be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Albert H. Sherman, 1219 Division Avenue; Rev. Horace Clapham officiating. Six grandsons of the deceased will act as pallbearers. The interment will be in Tacoma cemetery, and will be private.
