Hiram F. Garretson was born in Tioga, Pa., May 12, 1843. He was educated in Pennsylvania and Columbia College, now known as George Washington University, Washington, D. C., and was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia in 1868. He came to Tacoma April 22, 1887. From 1896 to 1902 he acted as judge for the city of Tacoma. He was married in 1869 to Ella M. Hayward of New York City, and has four children. When Washington became a state, he was appointed by Gov. Ferry as one of the harbor line commission, and was secretary of the board. The commission laid out the harbor of Tacoma while he was a member. He is practicing law in Tacoma, his offices being in the Bankers Trust building. He is a Mason and a member of the G. A. R.
