Samuel Thomas Chaplain was born on 5 November 1869 in Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland to Jeremiah and Malinda (Lydia) Chapline. Samuel was six years old when his father died. The following year his mother married William Frew, the widower of Malinda's twin sister, Matilda, who had died a few months prior to Jeremiah in 1876. By 1880 Samuel and his family had moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania.  The 1870 U.S. Federal Census revealed that Samuel's mother could not read or write which might explain why he and his brothers spelled their surname differently from their father.

On 19 November 1889 Samuel, age 20, married Mary C. Berkey, age 19, in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. Samuel and Mary lived in the Johnstown area for about 47 years. In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census Samuel's occupation was listed as Stationery Boiler Engineer. They had no children.

In 1936 the Chaplains moved to Elkhart, Indiana where Samuel worked at the Schult Trailer Mfg. Co. for about 15 years. Samuel retired in November 1951 due to ill health at age 82.
