Mr. J. F. Austin , who left Monroe in the spring of 1878, for the purpose of making his home in Mitchell County, died on the 18th of February.

Son of James and Winnie Thomas Austin

He married Belle Simpson, Belle was the daughter of Robert Simpson and Drucilla Tye. They had at least the following children:

- Henry Austin b. 1871
- Ethel Austin m. Mr. Huntley
- Miss Austin m. Paul Koonce
- Lilliam Austin m. Mr. Crowell

He died before 1880.

He served in Co. I, 48th NC Infantry CSA
He enlisted 24 Mar 1863 in Union Co., N.C.

"Austin, James F., Private,
Resided in Union County where he enlisted at age 17, March 24, 1863, for the war. Reported present or accounted for in April - June , 1863, and March - April, 1864. Place and date wounded not reported. No further records"
