s/o David Riley Altizer and Susan Slusher, h/o Sarah Rebecca Beavers and Sarah Belle Nuckles, Thomas served in the Confederate Army as a private in Co. C, 34th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, (Witcher's Battalion, Virginia Mounted Rifles, in the U.S. Civil War. He served in this unit with his brothers John and David Riley Jr. and all survived the War.
After the War, Thomas was a conspicuous confederate veteran. Thomas and Sarah raised their children and operated a small farm in Baptist Valley on Earls Branch near Cliffield until they fell victim to the killer flu that hit Tazewell County during the winter of 1918.

The snow was reported to be so bad that their coffins had to be taken to the graveyard on sleighs pulled by the pallbearers. They were buried on a small hill near where they lived with a beautiful view of the valley where they had made their life together.
