W. F. Paxton H dies;
funeral rites today

Funeral services for William F. Paxton II, well known Paducah businessman and former city commissioner, will be held today at 2 p.m. at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of which he was a member.

The Rev. Otto Diller and the Rev. Tim Taylor will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Mr. Paxton, 67, 234 W. Jefferson, died Friday at 3:15 p'm. at Lourdes Hospital. A Paducah native, he was the son of the late William Percey Paxton and Mrs. Flora Dickey Paxton, who survives.

He was a graduate of Augusta Tilghman High School and attended the University of Florida and Tulane University at New Orleans, La.

He was employed for 38 years with the Claussner Hosiery Co., of Paducah serving as director and vice president from 1936 to 1959, and president of the firm from 1959 until 1965. He maintained his own firm as a business consultant here from 1965 until his death.

Mr. Paxton's other business interests included such posts as director of Paducah ..Newspapers, Inc.; vice president and director of Southern Textile Machinery Co.; director of P. and S. Enterprises; director of Marvel Specialty Co., and president and director of the Avondale Corp.

Mr. Paxton was active in the Boy Scouts, serving five years as district chairman and six years as president of the Four Rivers Boy Scout Council. He was the first Eagle Scout in the council ever to become council president. He also was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest, volunteer award given by scouting at the council level.

Mr. Paxton also was active in civic and government activities. He. was elected to the Paducah City Commission in 1965, serving a single term. He earlier had served eight years on the - Paducah Board of Education. . A lifelong Republican, he also had served as Republican county treasurer, for a number of years and was a delegate from the First Congressional District to the GOP National Convention in 1952 and 1964.

He served as president of the Forest Hills Public Project Corp. from the time the project was purchased by the city in 1967 until the present time. In this post, his group planned and led the renovation of the project which resulted in some units being razed, while others were upgraded. Occupancy rates in the project had never exceeded 51 per cent until the city acquired the project. Following the renovation carried out by the corporation, occupancy rates rose as high as 98 per cent and have remained near that mark.

He was on the advisory committee at Lourdes Hospital.

In civic affairs, Mr. Paxton was a member of the Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, and was a former Rotarian. He also served five years as president of the Paducah Country Club, was listed in Who's Who in America; and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was married to the former Miss India Lang Watkins who died in January, 1970.

Survivors, besides his mother, include his wife, Mrs. Martha Wurth Paxton; a son, William F. Paxton III of Paducah; a daughter, Mrs. Barbaranelle Shelton of Paducah; a brother, Tom Paxton of Paducah; a sister, Mrs. James Rose Smith of Paducah,and three grandchildren, Russell Paxton Shelton and Misses Elizabeth Lang Shelton and Barbaranelle Shelton.
