Maria Giles was traveling with her parents, Thomas Davis Giles and Margaret Davis Giles, and her brothers, Hyrum Lorenzo Giles and Joseph Giles from Wales to Zion. After crossing the Atlantic on the Sanders Curling, from Liverpool to Boston, Maria Giles died of Measles en route to the Salt Lake Valley and was buried with other Welsh children in the Chicago Burial Grounds. She was not actually buried in Provo City Cemetery, the headstone was erected there as a cenotaph in her honor.
