Hyrum Lorenzo Giles, age 6, his brother Joseph Giles, age 8, and their infant sister, Maria, traveled with the Edward Bunker Handcart Company with their father, Thomas Davis Giles, The Blind Harpist, and their mother, Margaret Thomas Giles. Margaret Thomas Giles died on the plains of Wyoming after giving birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, who also died. Hyrum's younger sister, 17 month old Maria, also died on the journey. Due to the severe ill health and threatened death of their father, the boys were transferred to the John A. Hunt Wagon Company, traveling with the Martin Handcart Company, 1856. The children survived the experiences of the Martin Handcart Company and were reunited with their father in the valley of The Great Salt Lake. Their father, Thomas Davis Giles, traveled throughout Deseret playing the harp in concerts. Hyrum traveled with his father, playing the violin and singing. He later became a silver miner. Hyrum and his first wife, Mrs. Dorcas E. Giles, had two children, Ida D. Giles and William Henry Giles. His very young daughter Ida died in 1875, the same year that William Henry was born. Hyrum and Dorcas were divorced in 1877. Their son William Henry died in 1885. Hyrum married Minnie Jensen when he was 33 years old and she was 19 years old, on 8 June 1883 in Park City, Utah. They later had a log cabin in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Until his death, for many years, he lived with his family at 69 West 500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Hyrum and Minnie had eleven children together. Hyrum died 22 February 1924, at age 74, and was buried in Murray City Cemetery.
