James Gaskill was born at Bainbridge, Ohio, July 26, 1838 and died at his home on Depot street in Versailles at 11:45 a.m. on Nov. 23, 1904, being 66 yr, 3 mo and 17 days.
He came to Illinois in 1841 with his aunts, locating l l/4 miles south of Versailles. Since then he had made his home near Versailles. When 19 years old he enlisted in CD119 Illinois Infantry and served his country for 3 years.
He was married to Marybeth Newingham and to them were born 8 children. Mrs. John Wright of Versailles, Mrs. J.B. Bridgeman of Alexander, Albert Gaskill of Perry, Isaac and Harvey Gaskill of Versailles, 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Mrs. Cecil Hawn of Hersman, Mrs. Harvey Hoosier of Versailles, Samuel Gaskill of Augusta, Kan., Edward Gaskill of Quincy and a host of relatives and friends.
After the funeral services conducted by Elker Bassil, the body was conveyed to the Versailles cemetery accompanied by quite a number of old comrades and there laid away to await the call of the Master.
