Floyd Sterling Phillips, 92, of Washington, formerly of New Freeport area, Jackson Township, died at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Humbert Lane Personal Care Home, South Strabane Township, after being in failing health for the past three years.

He was born December 18, 1915, in Marshall County, W.Va., a son of Halcie Phillips Strawn, and resided in Jackson Township from 1977 until to moving to Washington in 2005.

Mr. Phillips attended Crabapple Community Church while living in Greene County and Trinity Bible Fellowship since moving to Washington.

He was a graduate of Cameron (W.Va.) High School and National Institute of Automotive Service.

Mr. Phillips was veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army as a private first class with Co. E., 26th Infantry in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded an European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three bronze stars, a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid gardener, always proud of his crop of tomatoes.

Prior to retiring in 1977, Mr. Phillips was employed as a transmission mechanic by the former Beatty Buick and Budd Baer Auto Sales in Washington for 27 years.

On April 22, 1939, he married Blanche Elizabeth McCracken, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Sara Lee, wife of Willard Mallery of Palm Bay, Fla., Nancy Jean Barlow and Dorothy "Dot" Louise Phillips, both of Washington, and with whom he and his wife made their home since 2005; a son, Roger S., husband of Mary Phillips of Elgin, Okla.; and a stepson, Richard, husband of Monique Headley of Great Falls, Mont.; a half brother, Charles "Bud" Strawn of Warren, Ohio; three half sisters, Dorothy Stern and Evelyn Postelwaite, both of Warren, and Grace Scott of Canonsburg; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to his mother, are a son, Edward Phillips, who died November 27, 1979; and three half brothers, Ralph, Merle and Carl (Sam) Strawn.

Friends were received from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, with Pastor Michael Roach officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery, Wind Ridge.

Graveside military rites were accorded by representatives of the U.S. Army and American Legion Post 330, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793 and Disabled American Veterans Post 123, all of Waynesburg.
