LAYTON -Floren Bennion "Nails" Nelson, a bomber pilot died Sunday, January 7, 2007. Nails was born on February 8, 1921 in Salt Lake City the son of Merlin Randalph and Zora Bennion Morrison. He married Dorothy Anderson in March 1942 in Elko, NV. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1995.

He attended elementary schools in Salt Lake City, Utah, and graduated from Granite High School in 1939. He attended the University of Utah (1939-42), where he played for the celebrated football coach Ike Armstrong on the University's Sun Bowl team. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He graduated from the American Institute for Foreign Trade (1948), from the University of Nebraska (1963), and from the prestigious Thunderbird American Graduate School of International Management (1964). He also attended Weber State College (1973 -74), and BYU (1974 1975).

Nails was an Air Force Bomber Pilot who was proud of his Air Force service. He fought in three wars, WWII, Korea, Vietnam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, an Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, two Air Force Commendation Medals and the French Pilot Wings while serving in France where he was training pilots to fight in Vietnam.

He enjoyed skeet and trap. In 1960 he won the Walker Cup which is the national Skeet Championship in Great Britain. He was the first American in 30 years to win the Walker Cup.

Surviving are his three daughters, Patricia Nelson, Seattle, WA; Catherine Drue Nelson, Ravensdale, WA; Darcy Cyd (Lund) Sparks, St. George, UT; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one brother, Vaughn Nelson, Bountiful, UT.

Preceded in death by his parents, wife, two daughters, Royce Jan Nelson Carver and Stephanie Tim Nelson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
