Although the headstone shows Mary's birth date as 1847, Irish baptismal records indicate that she was born in 1845. She immigrated to the USA with her father Patrick Kennedy, mother Winnifred Bourke Kennedy, and younger brother Thomas J Kennedy between 1850 to 1852.

It is believed that the Kennedys entered at the port of New York, but further research is needed. By 1852, the family was living in Ohio, where sister Hannah was born. Mary Ann married Patrick Hannan in Greene County, Ohio on 22 Aug 1866. Later they moved west along with the Kennedy family and other Irish families, settling in Neola with their family of fourteen children.
