Sister Mary Agnes Hannan was born to Irish immigrants, Patrick C. Hannan and Mary Ann Kennedy, who met and married in Ohio. As a child, Sister Hannan was known as Sara and moved from Ohio to Neola, Iowa, with her parents. Her Kennedy grandparents were already established there by the early 1880s.
Sara joined the Congregation of the Humility of Mary as did her younger sister, Theresa Frances, who became known as Sister Mary Aloysius Hannan.
