Charles Leroy McCarty passed away on Saturday, 10 December 2005, at the home of his daughter, Mary Elizabeth McCarty, after a short illness.

Mr. McCarty was born on Monday, 17 July 2022, in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas to Charles Virgil McCarty and Bessie Ellen Brown McCarty.

He was united in marriage to Doris Maxine Richardson on Saturday, 13 June 1942, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, where he was serving in the US Navy.

In 1960, Leroy became a deputy under Sheriff Hugh Pace, and in 1964 was elected Sheriff of Hidalgo County. He served for 33 years as Sheriff, undersheriff, deputy or jailer. He served as undersheriff for his wife, Doris when she was elected the first female Sheriff in New Mexico.

He was an avid horseman, knowledgeable in horse breeding and traiing.

He was preceeded in death by wife Doris, son Richard Leroy McCarty and grandaughter, Laura Faye.

He is survived by son Charles Samuel McCarty, son John Wayne McCarty, and daughter, Mary McCarty.

Services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Lordsburg with Pastor Jay Jones officiating. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

Casket Bearers were: his son, John WAYNE , grandson, Joshua, and longtime friends Lloyd Payne, G. L. Tucker, Chad Richardson and Juan Gonzales.
