Herman G. Bouma
CHOTEAU — Herman G. Bouma, 97, of Choteau, a farmer, died of natural causes Thursday in a Great Falls nursing home. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gorder Funeral Home in Choteau. His funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at the New Song Assembly of God Church in Choteau, with burial in Choteau Cemetery.

Herman was born Nov. 20, 1908, in Orange City, Iowa, the son of Pieter and Anna (Middle) Bouma. Herman walked to a country school from his mom and dad's homestead of 1910. He was a longtime farmer, from horse farming to steam tractor farming to modern-era farming. A month before his 95th birthday he was still running a combine.

Herman married Jeanette S. Spoelder on Nov. 20, 1937, in Great Falls, and she preceded him in death on April 28, 2003. Together they raised eight children. Herman loved reading and history and playing cards, especially pinochle and cribbage. Herman was always aware of what was going on around him in the world and many people asked his opinion on different matters. Herman was also a very devout Christian and ministers were coming over and visiting with him and praying with him and he had communion and prayed with his night sitter most days.

He is survived by children Mary Ellen (Allen) Allbaugh of Knoxville, Ill., Peter (Marie) Bouma of Missoula, Ann (James) Stratton of Stoughton, Wis., Bill Ross of Wellpinit, Wash., Florence (Ron) Frady of Conover, N.C., Ed Bouma of Choteau, Howard Bouma of Great Falls, and Joyce (Edwin) Kenney of Phoenix; his sister-in-law Margaret Bouma of Bozeman; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; his parents, Pieter and Anna Bouma; a sister, Fannie Blanksma and brothers Louie and John Bouma.

Memorials are suggested to the New Song Assembly of God Church, PO Box 97, Choteau, MT 59422.
