ROCKWELL CITY - Jean L. Gannon 102, passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Sunny Knoll Care Centre, Rockwell City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the United Methodist Church, Rockwell City, with Pastor Anita Bane officiating. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City.

Jean is survived by her cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Leslie; parents, Albert E. and Winifred Denman Morton; sisters, Mary Morton and Leone Moore; and brothers, Robert and John Morton.

Jean Lucille Morton Gannon was born June 12, 1909 on a farm southeast of Rockwell City, Iowa. She graduated from Rockwell City High School, with the Class of 1927. Jean then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College, and taught school in Somers, Knoxville, Redfield, and Cedar Rapids. During World War II, Jean considered it her patriotic duty to help the war effort. She moved to Detroit, Michigan to work in an airplane factory doing time and motion studies. She was the first woman to work in this field. She taught "Rosie the Riveters" their jobs. On November 29, 1946 she was united in marriage to Leslie L. Gannon at Rockwell City. The couple farmed in the Rockwell City area until retiring in 1971, and relocated to Loveland, Colorado. Jean and Leslie enjoyed traveling. In 1994, they returned to Rockwell City, and established their home at Sunnyview Independent Living. Leslie passed away in 1998. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Reading Circle, AAUW, and a former 4H Leader.
