William F. Ridgway, age 84, a resident of Portland, passed away Saturday morning at Jay County Hospital following a brief illness. He retired from the Portland Forge in 1989 after 39 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 211 in Portland. He was also a long time member of the Portland Moose Lodge.

William was born on June 23, 1927 in Pennville, the son of William M. and Violet (Taylor) Ridgway. He was married on March 18, 1948 to Mary Jane Bullens. She passed away on August 12, 1984.

Survivors include one son, James L. Ridgway (wife-Ann C.) of Portland, IN; two daughters, Debra McGraw (husband-Michael) of Portland, IN, and Sandra Wentz (husband-Samuel) of Portland, IN; two brothers, Harold Ridgway (wife-Ann) of Portland, IN, and Richard Ridgway of Portland, IN; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane; and a daughter, Carol Stone, Portland, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland. Pastor Hugh Kelly will officiate and burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery east of Pennville. American Legion Post 211 will provide military rites at the cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland.
