"Pray for the soul of Matthew William Wain who, after long and patient suffering, died on October 27th. 1880, aged 56 years." Matthew William Wain, the father of the artist Louis Wain (q.v.), was born in Leek in Staffordshire, the son of John Wain, a silk manufacturer. He started to make his way in his father's business but, in his twenties, became a Roman Catholic, whereupon his father disinherited him. William moved to London and became a traveller for a firm of wholesale drapers. On the 29th. October 1859, at the Spanish Place Chapel just East of Baker Street, he married Julie Felicie Boiteux, a girl of partly French descent. They had seven children: Louis (1860 -1939); Caroline (1862 - 14th. April 1917); Josephine (1864 - 14th. January 1939); a stillborn boy (1866); Claire (1868 - 20th. May 1945); Felicie (1871 - 8th. February 1940) and Marie (1871 - 3rd. March 1913). Louis, Caroline, Josephine, Felicie and Claire are all buried with their father, who died at Guy's Hospital. Louis and Josephine's names are just visible beneath their father's inscription, but the others are no longer legible. Marie was certified insane on the 4th. March 1901 and died three years later, of pleurisy and colitis, at St. Augustine's Hospital, Chartham Down, near Canterbury in Kent; she is buried at Westgate in the same county. The family never spoke of her. Their mother, Julie, died of influenza on the 26th. January 1910, and is buried at Margate in Kent.
