Claire Marie Wain was born on December 22 1868 at 52 Paddington Street, London W1. She was the fifth of six children - which included her famous elder brother, the cat artist Louis Wain - born to William Matthew, a commercial traveller and textile designer, and Julie Felicite Wain, an ecclesiastical designer. She outlived both her parents and all her siblings, before dying on May 20 1945 at 114 Church Road, West Norwood, SE London.

During her life, Wain and her younger sister (Julia) Felicie began to teach sketching and sell their art, having some success in creating miniatures, painting on glass, and fore-edge painting to books that allowed them to support themselves.  She also produced pencil drawn advertising cards for the Royal Sovereign Pencil Co during the 1920s.

Although her work was eclipsed by her brother, she was also an accomplished cat artist, drawing in both black and white and colour. Her original works still come up for sale occasionally at auction.

She collaborated with Louis on 'Louis Wain's Great Big Midget Book', published by Dean & Son Ltd. in 1934

1911 - living at 10 Collingwood Terrace (now 29 Westgate Bay Avenue), Westgate on Sea, Kent with Louis, Caroline, Josephine and Felicie. (Mother deceased 1910.) The Wains moved here in 1906 and remained until September 1916 when they returned to London, to 41 Brondesbury Road, NW6.

1939 register - living at 41 Brondesbury Road, London NW6 with sister Felicie. Electoral registers officially record her at this address to circa 1940. Sister Felicie dying in 1940 may have prompted the move.

She is buried at St Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery at Kensal Green in NW London, interred with her father, Louis, Caroline, Josephine, and Felicie.
