Henrietta was from a working-class family, but met and married a multimillionaire Walter Garrett who was in the snuff business, he died in 1895. His will requested that she (Henrietta), make a will so that her fortune would go to charitable institutions. He did not want the fortune to be "squandered by sisters, cousins, and aunts and uncles."
However, Henrietta never set up the will, she died in 1930, the fate of the $20 million estate was contested. Twenty-six thousand people from every walk of life were trying to prove their connection with the Garrett Snuff families. Rumor was spread that a servant hid Henrietta's will with her body after being upset she was left nothing from the estate. Armed guards had to be placed at her grave because of grave robbers. Later on Henrietta's grave was exhumed and rumor proved false.
