Born on the family farm in the Gowdeysville section of Union County that became Cherokee County in 1897, Paul Vaughn was the son of Robert Daniel "Bobby" Vaughn and Hattie Crocker Vaughn. He married Mamie Jeanette Gault in Gaffney in 1920. They had 14 children, 11 of whom lived to adulthood. Paul and Mamie divorced in the 1940s and Paul lived on his farm in the Pea Ridge section of Union County near Kelton. He was a farmer all his life.
