Lemuel "Lemie" Burnett McWhirter was born September 21, 1873, in Guin, Marion County, Alabama to Andrew Jackson McWhirter and Nancy Jane Whitehead McWhirter. He married Amelia "Melie" Isabelle Shaw on June 30, 1892, in Marion County, Alabama and they had the following children: Minnie Muriel; Manie; Mackley; Major Bonnie J. "Mack"; Ethel Ann; Marvin; Raymond Blanchard; Edgar Jackson; and Thomas Wayne McWhirter. Lemuel died in Mobile, Baldwin County, Alabama. According to the "Official Register of the United States, published every two years until 1911, lists him as the postmaster of Guin in 1909 at an annual salary of $642 and lists "Mrs. Melia I. McWhirter
, his wife, as assistant postmaster at an annual salary of $240. The 1911 Official Register lists Lemuel B. "McWhister" as postmaster at an annual salary of $709 and "Minnie McWhister", his daughter, as clerk at an annual salary of $116. Lemuel was appointed postmaster of the Guin, Marion County, Alabama Post Office on September 27, 1907, and served until about June 20, 1914, just before he moved his family to Mobile, Alabama where he worked for Alabama Dry Docks, building ships. He was a master carpenter and built a large house in Guin, Marion County, Alabama for his wife and 9 children.
The 1920 Chickasaw County, Alabama, Mobile, Precinct 9, Chickasaw Town Census Listed Lemuel "Lemie" with his wife and 8 of his children. The oldest one, Mackley, had already married and left home.(GMT)
