John Crow McWhirter was the son of Andrew Jackson McWhirter and Nancy Jane Whitehead McWhirter. He was killed when a horse or mule kicked him in the head when he was only 13 years of age. He was buried in the Old Poplar Springs Cemetery which was next to the Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church where his father, Andrew Jackson McWhirter, preached for years. He also preached on alternate Sundays at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in Hatley, Mississippi. The McWhirter family lived close to the cemetery.
