Funeral for Ruth C. Kern, 83, a former Davenport resident, is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport. Interment will follow at the Egypt Cemetery.

Ms. Kern died Jan. 31 in St. Maries, Idaho.

She was born Feb. 11, 1928, to Emma and Emil Kern at Davenport. In her younger school days, she went by horse or walked the mile and a half to the country school. After consolidation with the Davenport School District, she went through high school in Davenport, finishing as her class valedictorian.

She received a teaching degree from what is now Eastern Washington University in Cheney and began in the Spokane School District. For 23 years, she taught second and third grades. She retired from teaching early so as to care for her mother.

A family statement notes that "Ruth gave freely of her hand and her heart to those in need, not only locally, but countries far away. Her giving became a passion until funds gave out. She was a special 'aunt' to many of her relatives and to some a second mother. She also gave freely of her exceptional humor and her few years at Valley Vista Care Center blessed her caretakers with it. In return, they loved her."

"her delight was savoring what was inside a book," the statement continues. "She read till her eyes wouldn't let her. Collecting videos was her hobby and left her with at least 1500."

She was active in First Presbyterian, Zion and Christ Lutheran churches and was secretary for TOPS for many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, sister Anna Marie Norton and brother-in-law Rusty Norton.

She leaves a sister, Martha (Kern) Green of Plummer, Idaho; seven nieces, five nephews and cousins in Germany, including Wilfried, his wife Waltraud and their daughter Daniela from Meersburg. (per Davenport Times)
