Garrett R. "Gary" Brouwer was born December 25, 1930 to Aleida and John W. Brouwer Sr. in Cordova, IA.

He graduated high school in Monroe, IA and served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He attended the University of Iowa for two years and graduated with a business degree from Central Missouri State at Warrensburg, Mo. He was owner-operator of Ozark Truck Plaza "Skelly" in Alma for many years. He had various other businesses through the years and he always enjoyed the farm and raising cattle. Garrett was a member of the Alma United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gertrude Willemsen and Martha Willemsen; brothers, Hank, Arnold, Allen, "Johnny" and John Brouwer Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois of the home; a daughter, Peggy Ann Brouwer of Alma, AR; a son, Bradley Ray Brouwer of Fort Smith, AR; a sister, Henrietta Vander Velden of Newton, IA; a brother, Wilfred Brouwer of Marion, IA; two grandsons, Matt and Marc Doty of Conway, AR; three great grandchildren, Ashlee, Liam and Kimora.

Graveside service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, AR under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home in Van Buren, AR.

Officiating the service will be Rodney Brouwer of Newton Iowa, a nephew of Garrett's.

Pallbearers will be Matt Doty, Marc Doty, Brad Brouwer, Harold Callahan, Paul Damascus and Louis McFarland.
