Funeral services for Martha Willemsen, 93, of Pella, who died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Pella Regional Health Center- Long Term Care, were held Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Third Reformed Church in Pella. Pastors Kevin Korver and John Vandenberg officiated at the services.

Martha was born on Nov. 13, 1910, in Barneveld, Gelderland, Netherlands, to John W. and Aleida C. (Vande Vis) Brouwer. When Martha was eight years old, her family came to the United States. She attended schools in Holland and then Sully Christian Grade School where she completed the eighth grade.

On Jan. 19, 1933 she married Joe Willemsen at the Otley Reformed Church parsonage. The couple farmed for many years north of Otley before moving to Pella in 1967. After moving to Pella, Joe and Martha worked for Rolscreen and Central College.

Martha had a love for gardening, working with flowers, reading, and visiting with her many friends. She was a member of various women societies while a member of Otley Reformed Church. She also taught Bible School at her church. Currently she was a member of the Third Reformed Church in Pella.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; a son, Henry and infant daughter, Alice Jean; four brothers, Henry, Arnold, Allen, and John W. "Johnny"; and a sister, Gertrude Willemsen.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Ron) Van Weelden of Otley; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, John W., Garrett and Wilfred "Bill" Brouwer; and a sister, Henrietta Vander Velden.
