Dr. A.L. "Al" Woodard, 81, died Wednesday morning (November 25, 2009) at his residence in Athens following an extended illness.
He was a native and life-long resident of Ware County prior to making his home in Athens for the past year. He was the son of the late Newt Elmer Woodard and Arizona Tobitha Tuten Woodard. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Allison Woodard Carter and a sister Nancy Woodard Whittle. He was educated in the Ware County School System and the University of Georgia.
Dr. Woodard taught in the Ware County Schools System for forty years which included twenty-seven years as Director of Okefenokee Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA). He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waycross.
Survivors include his wife of fifty three years, Harriette Harley Woodard of Athens (formerly of Waycross); a son, David Albert Woodard (wife Michelle) of Athens, a daughter, Susan Woodard Pittman (husband Bill) of Suwanee; five grandchildren, Abigail Woodard and Annabelle Woodard both of Athens; William Pittman, Anna Harriette Pittman, and Samuel Pittman all of Suwanee, and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A Memorial Service celebrating Dr. Woodard's life will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday (December 1, 2009) at Okefenokee RESA, 1450 North Augusta Avenue, Waycross, GA 31503. A time of visitation will be held immediately following the service until 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Waycross College Foundation, Inc., 2001 South Georgia Parkway, Waycross, GA 31503; the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation Scholarship Fund, 1701 Carswell Avenue, Waycross, GA 31503, or to the Boy Scouts of America, 302 Screven Avenue, Waycross, GA 31501.
