Leopold Couture - A long time resident of Colchester, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday evening, he was 54.

Leopold was born in Williamstown Vermont on 29 May 1929.In 1936, his father George passed away, and in 1939 his mother Ella joined his father, leaving three young children. Fortunately, George's sister,Charlotte "Lottie" and her husband, Leo Myers, became custodians over the children and raised them as their own.

Leopold joined the Army Air Corp during WWII at 17 years of age, he served in Japan just after the war. Upon his leaving service he went to work at the Burlington Free Press, as a maintenance man, where he was employed until his death.

Leopold, was also a very gifted carpenter, not only could he build a house, but he was skilled in finish work and delicate wood work.

Leopold was predeceased by his parents,guardians, and his brother William. Leopold leaves behind his wife of 31 years, the former Mildred Lucille Trainer of Montpelier. He also leaves behind his sisters, Lucienne "Nan" Angolano of Winooski and Constance E. Callahan of Lowell Massachusetts. In addition, he leaves behind 5 nephews, and 3 nieces as well as many grand nieces and nephews. Leopold never had children of his own, but he was like a father to his nieces and nephews, and he was in fact, a great influence in their lives.

Leopold was a Catholic and will be interned in St Stephen's Cemetery in Colchester.

Gravesite Details

Leopold was very well liked , hundreds of relatives and friends attended his grave side service, cars lined Gorge Road from the top of the hill down to the dam. People said they had never seen so many at a funeral. He was an exceptional man.
