JERRY RAAK CALLED
Jurrien G. Raak, pioneer resident of Sioux county, died at his home at 0range City on Friday, September 6, after an illness of many months. An operation was performed in the hope of benefitting his health and he made a courageous fight to regain his oldtime spirit, but without avail.
Jerry as everyone called him, was born at Holland, Michigan, January 4. 1864. He came to Sioux county with his parents while still a boy, and helped with the work on the farm south of Orange City where the family settled.
Later he became an apprentice in the blacksmith shop of B. Van Olst and became an expert blacksmith.
He married Miss Ellen Van Olst at 0range City in June, 1885, and Mr. Raak was in the blacksmithing trade at the county seat for many years.
Eleven children were born to the couple, but two preceded their father in death, one child dying in infancy and Mrs. Ida Popma passing away 9 years ago.
Besides his helpmate, he is survived by their nine children, as follows: Mrs. J. De Raad, Kingsley, Ia. Mrs. Ring De Jager, Orange City; Gerrit, Edward and Raymond Raak, Orange City; Jerry Raak, Hospers; Paul Raak, Ocheyedan; Elmer and Earl Raak,; Chicago. His brother John of Brookings, S.D., also survives.
Rev. Bert Brower, pastor of the American.Reformed church, was in charge of the funeral services which were held at the Van: Etten funeral home at Orange. City on Monday afternoon, September 9, at 2:00 p. m. Interment was made at the Orange City cemetery.
Among those who came from away to attend the services were John Raak of Brookings, Mr. and Mrs. John De Raad and children of Kingsley; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Raak of Ocheyedan; Elmer and Earl Raak of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Bullock of Slayton, Minn., Mrs. Harold Cook of Lake Wilson, Minn.; Mrs. John Van Olst of Chandler, Minn.
