Victorino Luciano Silvan Hernandez was born in Fuentesauco, Province of Zamora, Spain, the son of Celestino Silvan Dovales and Agustin Hernandez Martin. He married Romana (Ramona) Lorenzo Martin in 1896. They emigrated, along with their 4 children and Silvan siblings and families to the sugar fields of Hawaii on the SS ORTERIC from Gibraltar in 1911. Their 5 year old son, Jacinto, died of measles and was buried at sea.

Several years after working in Hawaii, they all moved to California where they raised their children. He is buried in the shared grave plot with his wife, Romana and his remaining son, Celestino.
