Florence Toft Bettendorf, a volunteer for nearly 30 years with the Easter Seal Society of Dade County, died Sunday of kidney failure at Mount Sinai Medical Center, her family said. She was 82.
Bettendorf was stricken with polio in 1957. After undergoing rehabilitation, she appreciated the Easter Seal Society's efforts in helping victims of the disease.
A member of the society's board for 25 years, she helped found the Easter Lilly Ball, a fund-raising event in the 1960s, '70s and early '80s. She also chaired the Easter Seal's scholarship committee.
"During the early '60s, she drove her station wagon and picked up the patients," said daughter Margie Bettendorf, a reading specialist with Dade County Public Schools.
Bettendorf was also a devoted grandmother. Last week, granddaughter Heidi was sworn in as an attorney by Dade County Judge Scott Silverman at Bettendorf's hospital bedside.
"Mom appreciated it," said daughter Kristi Swartz, a prosecutor for the Dade state attorney's office. "She congratulated her."
Bettendorf, who was born and raised in Webster Groves, Mo., was named The St. Louis Globe-Democrat's Woman of the Year in 1954 for her charitable work at the Lutheran Hospital in St. Louis. Her former husband, Joseph, founded the Bettendorf's grocery chain in St. Louis in 1929.
She lived in Miami Beach from 1957 until last December when she moved to Stuart. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by sons Terry Bettendorf of St. Louis and John Bettendorf of Hobe Sound; sisters Jane Boon and Dorothy Moore, both of Webster Groves; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held Thursday in Webster Groves, at the Gerber Funeral Home.

Among the survivors are two sons, Terry Bettendorf of Creve Coeur and John Bettendorf of Hobe Sound, Fla.; two daughters, Margaret Bettendorf of Miami Beach and Kristina Swartz of Miami; two sisters, Jane Boon and Dorothy Moore, both of Webster Groves; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
