James was one of 8 children born to Bridget (Murphy) and Philip Barron. The family came to New York in 1854 Philip died in 1855 and James took on the responsibility of the family at 16. He had been raised in Ireland as a Catholic under British rule and was denied schooling. He couldn't read or write. James, his mom Bridget, siblings, Hannah, Jane, Sylvester, and Nicholas, made their way to the Irish community in Iowa. He married Catherine Ryan and they had 6 children
