He was raised and worked on the family farm in Shelby, Orleans, New York. About 1866 Alfred moved the family to South Wales, Erie, New York. Alfred worked as a farmer in Colden and Aurora, Erie, New York from 1866 to after 1880. He died on 15 Oct 1887 at the age of 64 in Colden, Erie, New York. He was buried at South Wales Cemetery in South Wales, Erie, New York.

Alfred Hawley and Nancy Katherine Miller were married on 20 Jan 1857 in Shelby, Orleans, New York. Nancy Katherine Miller, who went by Katherine, was the daughter of Peter Miller and Katherine Dygert. She was born on 12 May 1837 in Canajoharie, Montgomery, New York. Alfred and Katherine lived in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York in 1860. They lived in South Wales, Aurora, Erie, New York in 1870. Alfred and Katherine lived in Colden, Erie, New York in 1880. Katherine died on 6 Jun 1914 at the age of 77 in Colden, Erie, New York. She was buried at South Wales Cemetery in South Wales, Erie, New York.
