Nancy Katherine Miller was born on 12 May 1837 in Canajoharie, Montgomery, New York. She was the daughter of Peter Miller and Katherine Dygert. She favored the name Katherine over Nancy and it seems she went by Katherine throughout adulthood.

Katherine Miller and Alfred Hawley were married on 20 Jan 1857 in Shelby, Orleans, New York. Alfred Hawley, son of Gideon Hawley and Mary Paringer, was born on 18 Sep 1823 in Lockport, Niagara, New York. They lived in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York in 1860. They lived in Aurora, Erie, New York in 1870. Katherine and Alfred lived in Colden, Erie, New York in 1880. Alfred worked as a farmer in Colden and Aurora, Erie, New York from before 1870 to after 1880. He died on 15 Oct 1887 at the age of 64 in Colden, Erie, New York. He was buried at South Wales Cemetery in South Wales, Erie, New York.

After Alfred's death Katherine and several of her children lived with her parents, Peter and Katherine Miller in Colden, Erie, New York in 1892. She lived with daughter Jessie's family in Colden, Erie, New York from before 1905 to after 1910. Nancy died on 6 Jun 1914 at the age of 77 in Colden, Erie, New York. She was buried at South Wales Cemetery in South Wales, Erie, New York.

iv. Edward Clarence Hawley, born 18 Jun 1863, Shelby, Orleans, New York; married Louise F. Parker 6 May 1889; died 24 Dec 1937, Orlando, Florida.

v. Elizebeth Hawley, born 22 Jan 1866, Aurora, Erie, New York; married George Gilbert Cotton 28 Jun 1893, East Aurora, Erie, New York; died 1909.
