Oran played high school football at Dubuque Senior High School, where he was part of the 1924 Iowa State championship football team. After graduation from high school, he moved on to play college football at the University of Iowa.
After college, he played in the National Football League for the Green Bay Packers, the Minneapolis Red Jackets, the Providence Steam Roller, the Boston Braves, and the Staten Island Stapletons, it was with the Packers, that he was a member of their 1930 NFL Championship team, he left the NFL in 1934, and returned to Iowa, where he attended the State Police Academy At Camp Dodge.
Oran was shot and killed while struggling with a suspect who had abducted him during a traffic stop on Highway 61 near Fairport, he had stopped the vehicle, suspecting it was stolen. As he approached the car the driver pointed a gun at him and told him to get into the vehicle. They drove away and Oran grabbed the driver and began to struggle with him. During the struggle two shots were fired, one struck Oran in the abdomen and groin and the other struck the suspect in the head, killing him instantly.
Oran was able to seek help and was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wound the next day.
Oran had served with the Iowa State Patrol for one year. His badge number was 40. He died at the young age of 32.
