He married Myrtie Babe Haywood on March 7, 1927 in Charlotte, Michigan and together they had four children, Dorthea D, Shirley Mae, Lila Rae, and Bonnie Jean. They got divorced and he remarried and also had Albert, James, Jack, Sammy, Lonnie, Willie, Marion, and Helen. On May 11, 1948 he died in Toledo, Ohio at the age of 43 from Aortic stenosis.
