Second Lieutenant G. J. Back, USMCR, was designated Naval Aviator #7712 on 31 May 1941. Entered active service via the Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program, having enlisted at NRAB Opa-Locka, Fla.

2nd Lt. Back, and his aircrewman, Aviation Radioman 3rd Class Class George Bryan, Jr., USNR, were lost at sea when their aircraft, on a routine training mission, went missing off Delray Beach, Fla.

2LT Back, whose family name was Baczkowski, had graduated from the University of Miami in May 1940. ARM3c Bryan was listed as 26 years of age, and from Oak Hil, West Va.
