Joseph inherited the bulk of the family estate after the death of his parents, and according to a History of Frederick County "His life, which was an exemplary one, was devoted to the cultivation of the soil.." and "was interested in all that pertained to the prosperity and best interest of the community, and was esteemed and loved by friends and neighbors."
