John W. Baker was the son of Joseph Greenwood Baker and his wife Hannah Devilbiss.
He was the only child born to the couple and was raised on the family farm; the fourth, and as it turned out the last, generation of Bakers on the land at Oak Orchard settled by Henry Baker about 1750.

He married Cecelia Devilbiss(they were second cousins)in 1884 and their son Wm. Edward was born in 1885.
By 1910 he had retired from farming and moved with his family to Carroll County and lived in the village of New Windsor.

John William Baker's son died in 1917, his wife Cecelia in 1927.
