Mrs. Whitesel was born on Sept. 2, 1936, in Richmond and was the daughter of the late Norma Mae Butler. She was raised by her grandparents, the late Moffet and Bessie Butler. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marysue Sheffer.
Joyce attended Bridgewater High School and previously was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.
She was united in marriage to Charles E. Whitesel Sr. on Sept. 12, 1959, who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1987.
She enjoyed playing cards, attending yard sales and auctions and spending time with her grandchildren and beloved dog Zero.
Surviving family includes three daughters, Tammy L. Miller and husband, Charles, Briery Branch, Lisa Shull and husband. Doug, Briery Branch, and Angela C. Dahmer and husband, Darrell, Union Springs; one son, Charles E. Whitesel Jr. and wife, Tamara, Briery Branch; 11 grandchildren, Kim Miller and companion JR, Dusty Miller, Joey Shull and companion, Jessica, Tanya Shull and companion, Kevin, Jamie Whitesel and wife, Jessi, Joel Whitesel and wife, De, Shawn Whitesel, Tiffany Whitesel and companion, K.C., Janette Whitesel, Autumn Dahmer and Dylan Dahmer; five great-grandchildren, Ariel Helmick, Cassie Shifflett, Kealan Shull, Kylee Shull and Jase Whitesel; and two step-great-grandchildren, Xavier and Bubby.
A funeral service, conducted by Pastor Randy Cosner, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Briery Branch Church of the Brethren.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening (Thursday) at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg or anytime at the home her daughter.
