George Clark Gwathmey was one of the children born to Owen Gwathmey, Jr. and his wife Ann Rogers Clark. George relocated with his family to Louisville, Kentucky when he was a young child and was a very successful farmer as an adult and he was the first cashier of the Bank of Kentucky.

George was united in marriage on October 2, 1814 in Louisville, Kentucky to Sophia Weston Gerard. George and Sophia were blessed with the birth of at least twelve children during their marriage:
