Alfred was united in marriage to Georgiana Emily "Georgy" Keats, one of the daughters of George Keats and his wife Georgiana Augusta Wylie, in Louisville, Kentucky in 1847. Georgy was the niece of the Romantic Poet John Keats.
Alfred and Georgy were blessed with the birth of one son during their short marriage, George Keats Gwathmey. Alfred, according to historical data, becoming obsessed with contracting cholera, drank heavily and was abusive during his wife's pregnancy. After the birth of their son, Alfred removed to New Orleans, Louisiana in November 1850.
Alfred passed away in Charity Hospital in New Orleans of cholera in December 1850. Alfred is interred with his parents and siblings. His wife Georgy is interred in the same cemetery with her parents.
