Dorothy played the church organ and had a beautiful singing voice. She reportedly sang as she was dying.

Obit: " Mrs. Dorothy Collins Cooney, 61, of 3615 East G St., died Monday in a local hospital. Born in Argyle, Minn., she had lived in Tacoma for 46 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, the Altar Society, Local No. 61, Cooks and Waiters Union and Phoenix Auxillary No. 234. She is survived by four sons, Glen R., and James H. Collins of Tacoma, Roy A. Collins of Chico, CA. and Capt. Harvey J. Collins, Fort Sill, Okla.; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Hickock [sic], Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Ruth Rhyner, Puyallup; two sisters, Mrs. Delvina Rinkenberger and Mrs. Blanche Roberts; both of Tacoma, 11 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Note: Services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church, with the cortege leaving Gaffney's at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the church." (Tacoma News Tribune 1 Mar 1954)

Aunt Jane Tessier states that husband left for another woman and left Dorothy with six kids to raise. At one point Dorothy's home burned down and her six children had to be taken in by family members. The two girls, Ruth and Florence, were temporarily placed in a convent orphanage.
