WINTERGREEN – Bland Massie Hughes, 91, of Route 1, died Monday afternoon (April 4) at Bridgewater Home. He was born at Massies Mill on Sept. 1, 1896, a son of Alexander F. and Sallie Napier Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was retired from the Nelson County School system. He was a member of Wintergreen Christian Church and was a veteran of World War I.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Carl A. (Bonnie) Crushorn of Waynesboro; two sons, B. Mitchell Hughes of Waynesboro and Gordon M. Hughes of Wintergreen; one brother, John Hughes of Nellysford; three grandsons, four granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue (McGann) Hughes, on Sept. 13, 1975; six brothers, Tucker C. Hughes, Moses B. "Bunk" Hughes, Jack Hughes, Webster Hughes, Richard Hughes and Wirt A. Hughes; and four sisters, Daisy Rittenhouse, Sue Thomas, Mariah (Fox) Hughes and Annie Small.

A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Rev. J.D. Farries, with burial in the Hughes' family cemetery at Wintergreen. The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Bridgewater Home, Bridgewater, Va. 22812. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
