Dead and Dying
A Heart-rending Scene!
One Killed, One Mortally Wounded and Four Others Shot.

At Five Points, this county, on yesterday afternoon at about 5 o'clock, a difficulty occurred between Messrs. Geo. Cumbee and Lem Satterwhite on one side and Messrs, Millard, Byron, Apling and Lee Trammell on the other side. Several other parties took a hand after the row began and reports are very conflicting as to the origin of the difficulty. Pistols, knives, sticks and rocks were used, and as a result George Cumbee was killed on the spot, Apling Trammell was mortally wounded, Reuben Cumbee was shot in the leg and Millard and Byron Trammell each received pistol shot wounds. Lem Satterwhite and Walter Alsobrooks also received slight pistol shot wounds, while Mr. John Alsobrooks, who was acting as a peace-maker, had his shirt cut in several places.
As soon as the news reached LaFayette, a posse was dispatched to the scene of the difficulty under the direction of Sheriff McClendon. When the Sheriff and posse, (among whom was the writer) reached Five Points they found everything quiet. The friends of the dead man, Mr. Geo. Cumbee, had carried him to his home near Stroud. Mr. Apling Trammell, mortally wounded, was carried to his home one mile away, while the other injured had been cared for.
The Sheriff and posse arrested last night Messrs. Millard, Lee and Byron Trammell and they were lodged in jail here this morning. Other arrests may follow.
The affair is a deplorable one and is to be regretted by all law-abiding people. Mr. Cumbee will be buried this afternoon at the family burying ground** in beat one. Heartfelt sympathy of friends go out to his grief-stricken wife, his aged parents and brothers and sisters. George was kind-hearted and true to his friends and knew no fear.
An operation was performed on Mr. Apling Trammell this morning and he may recover. He has a wife and several little children dependent on him for support.
The cause of the difficulty was politics. The Sun refrains from expressing its opinion of the affair as it will be left for the courts to settle. We could say a great deal more.

"The LaFayette Sun" - August 19, 1896:

Geo. N. Cumbee.

Geo. N. Cumbee, son of Rev. John Cumbee, was born June 8th, 1865, and lost his life at the hands of a murderer on the 4th day of August 1896. A devoted wife and three children, together with a large circle of relatives and friends, mourn his untimely end. While the manner of his death makes more intense their grief, "Vengeance is mine, and I will repay, saith the Lord." Noted for his quiet and genteel deportment, and for the peaceableness of his disposition, Geo. Cumbee was admired and loved by those who knew him, and it is not strange that many hearts burned with indignation as men saw how foully and brutally his life had been taken away from him. Truly it was enough to stir the souls of men to their profoundest depths; and yet, amidst it all, they who suffered most were able to commit it all to Him who will repay. While not a member of any church the deceased, about five years ago, made a profession of faith in Christ, and while his life had about it the imperfection incident to humanity, he yet gave evidence of the fact that he had been saved by the grace of God. Lines of comfort are thus thrown into the lives of those who mourn, and while his blood cries out from the ground, may they look to the dear God and Father above, not only to wipe away the tears from their eyes, but to deal with those who have robbed them of a kind husband, a devoted father, an affectionate son, a loving brother, a faithful friend, "The Lord of all the earth will do right."

- J.L.G.
Married to Hattie Irene Page in 1893 with whom he had a daughter Gladys Cumbee. He and Hattie were married at the time of his death.
