Mrs. Mary Ann Matthews died in her rocking chair Monday morning about nine o'clock at the home of her sister, Mrs. Will Vinson. She was in her 84th year and had been in declining health for about three months, being in serious condition for about three weeks prior to her death, but had seemed to be much improved the last two or three days of her life.
Funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at three with her pastor, Rev. Montague Cook, in charge, assisted by Rev. Otis Kirby and Rev. Belt White. Burial was in the city cemetery. Johnson & Co. was in charge, of arrangements.
In the immediate family she is survived by only two sisters, Mrs. Will Vinson, of Roanoke, and Mrs. J. W. Grady, of Stroud, who alone remain of the original family of eleven children. Their father, Rev. John Cumbee, was a well known Baptist minister in this section. Mrs. Matthews husband, the late Henry Matthews, preceded her in death by eight years.
Mrs. Matthews long was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church and loved to attend its services, but for the past year she had been unable to go. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
